ANTERIOR PART OF NORMA BASALIS

 Introduction :

Norma basalis is the basal view of the skull. considering it as one of the most difficult part of studying the skull, the following short notes will help you revise and get through it with ease.

Anatomical divisions:

For the sake of understanding, Norma basalis is divided into three parts
1.Anterior part of Norma basalis
2. Middle part of Norma basalis
3. posterior part of Norma basalis

Anterior part of Norma basalis

The anterior part of Norma basalis extends from the alveolar arch to the posterior border of the hard palate

it is further divided into the alveolar arch and hard palate

Alveolar arch:

  • provides a socket for tooth

Midpalatal suture density ratio: Assessing the predictive power of a novel predictor of skeletal response to maxillary expansion

  • forms the anterior boundary for Norma basalis

Hard palate:

  • anterior 2/3rd - palatine process of maxilla
  • posterior 1/3rd -horizontal plates of the palatine
  • both palatines connected by interpalatine suture
  • palatine and maxilla connected through the intermaxillary suture

Structures:

  1. greater palatine fossa - transmits descending palatine vessel
  2. incisive fossa- transmits greater and lesser palatine vessels from the oral to nasal cavity and brings the nasopalatine nerve in the opposite direction
  3. lesser palatine fossa - transmits lesser palatine vessels
  4. posterior nasal spine  - attachment to musculus uvulae
  5. pyramidal process of maxilla
  6. palatine crest - provides attachment to the palatine aponeurosis
